Central government staff DA set to hit 67% ahead of new pay panel

Central government employees are likely to receive a dearness allowance (DA) increase to 67 percent from January 2027, according to projections based on current inflation data. The projected uptick from the existing 63 percent rate hinges on consumer price inflation remaining at August 2024 levels through December 2024.

The timing of this DA adjustment is significant as it is expected to be implemented before the Eighth Pay Commission submits its report to the government. Officials anticipate this could mark the last DA revision to be sanctioned under the Seventh Pay Commission structure, which has governed central employee compensation since 2016.

Dearness allowance calculations are traditionally indexed to inflation metrics and are revised periodically to account for cost-of-living increases. The DA directly impacts the take-home salary of roughly 50 lakh central government employees and over 60 lakh pensioners across India.

The projection remains contingent on inflation figures remaining stable at current levels. Should commodity prices or other cost factors change significantly over the coming months, the final DA percentage could vary from the 67 percent estimate. The government is expected to formally announce the revised DA rate closer to the implementation date in early 2027.
