Centre allocates 5 lakh houses to Andhra Pradesh, Telangana under PMAY-G

The central government has allocated five lakh houses between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G), according to an announcement by the Union Minister of State for Rural Development. Andhra Pradesh will receive an additional 2.25 lakh housing units under the scheme, while Telangana has been allocated 1.21 lakh units.

The fresh allocation represents a significant push to expand affordable housing in both states under the flagship rural housing programme. The initiative aims to provide basic pucca houses with essential amenities to eligible beneficiaries in rural areas across the country.

However, progress in Andhra Pradesh has lagged considerably. According to the Minister, only 23 percent of the housing allocation for the 2019-24 period has been completed in the state so far. This completion rate indicates substantial delays in the implementation of the scheme, raising questions about the pace at which the newly allocated units can be constructed and delivered.

The PMAY-G scheme, which seeks to provide housing to all eligible rural households, has been a key component of the government's rural development agenda. The latest allocation is expected to accelerate housing construction in both southern states and address the persistent shortage of adequate rural housing.
