Centre approves ₹27,370 crore power transmission expansion in Andhra Pradesh

The Union government has green-lit a ₹27,370 crore power transmission infrastructure project for Andhra Pradesh under the third phase of the Green Energy Corridor (GEC-III) initiative. The ambitious scheme represents a major push to strengthen the state's electricity distribution network and accommodate growing power demand across the region.

The project will involve the addition of 7,872 circuit kilometres of new transmission lines and 9,500 MVA of additional substation capacity to the existing grid. These infrastructure enhancements are designed to facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources and improve overall transmission efficiency across Andhra Pradesh.

Implementation of the initiative will proceed in phases, with the first phase expected to be operational by the end of financial year 2029-30. The expanded transmission infrastructure is anticipated to support the state's energy security objectives and enable smoother distribution of power to consumers across urban and rural areas.

The GEC-III framework has been developed to address transmission bottlenecks and modernise power infrastructure in states with significant renewable energy potential. Andhra Pradesh, which has substantial solar and wind energy resources, stands to benefit substantially from the enhanced transmission capacity.
