Centre Constitutes Panel to Strengthen Pharmaceutical Marketing Code

The Department of Pharmaceuticals has established a dedicated panel to conduct a comprehensive review of the Uniform Code for Pharmaceutical Marketing Practices (UCPMP), a self-regulatory framework governing the promotional conduct of pharmaceutical companies across India.

The committee's mandate includes assessing how effectively the existing code addresses unethical marketing practices within the pharmaceutical industry. The panel will examine current enforcement mechanisms and identify gaps in their implementation, while gathering stakeholder feedback on the code's adequacy in the contemporary regulatory landscape.

Based on its findings, the three-member committee will formulate recommendations aimed at strengthening regulatory oversight and deterring misleading or unethical marketing by pharmaceutical manufacturers. The review comes amid ongoing concerns about inappropriate promotional practices in the sector, including aggressive direct-to-consumer advertising and questionable incentive structures offered to healthcare professionals.

The initiative underscores the government's commitment to protecting public health and ensuring that pharmaceutical marketing practices align with ethical standards. The committee's recommendations are expected to inform potential amendments to the UCPMP or refinements in its enforcement protocols, potentially involving regulatory authorities and industry bodies.
