Centre develops contingency plan for 225 districts as rabi sowing lags

The Indian Council of Agricultural Research is building an integrated digital dashboard to monitor weather, water availability and district-level conditions to guide contingency planning and farm advisory services across India's rabi season.

With rabi sowing falling short of targets across multiple districts, the Centre is preparing a comprehensive contingency plan covering 225 districts to mitigate potential crop losses and ensure farmer support. The initiative aims to provide real-time information and targeted interventions to address regional agricultural challenges during the winter cropping season.

The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) is developing a dynamic digital dashboard that will integrate critical data streams including weather forecasts, water resource availability, and district-level agricultural information. This integrated platform is designed to enable evidence-based decision-making at multiple administrative levels and facilitate timely policy responses to emerging challenges in the field.

The dashboard will serve as a central tool for generating farm-specific advisories and supporting contingency planning. By consolidating weather patterns, water status, and ground-level data, the system aims to help officials and farmers make informed decisions about crop selection, planting schedules, and resource management throughout the rabi season.

The move reflects growing recognition of the need for data-driven agricultural planning in India, where weather variability and water constraints increasingly threaten crop outcomes. Officials expect the dashboard to enable faster identification of at-risk districts and allow for rapid deployment of advisory services and support measures to vulnerable farming communities across the country.
