India's federal government has issued a comprehensive advisory directing over-the-top streaming platforms and digital news publishers to strengthen their content management practices and comply with existing regulations more rigorously. The initiative reflects growing official concern about content authenticity and publisher accountability in the digital media ecosystem.
The advisory identifies nine key areas requiring enhanced publisher diligence. Chief among these is the mandatory time-stamping of visual content to establish provenance and prevent the spread of outdated or manipulated material. Publishers have also been directed to clearly identify and label artificially generated content created through emerging technologies, a measure aimed at combating deepfakes and synthetic media.
The directive emphasizes that all digital content platforms must follow the Information Technology Act, 2000, and related rules "in letter and spirit," signaling that the government views existing compliance measures as insufficient. Officials stressed that platforms must move beyond minimal regulatory adherence to adopt more stringent editorial and verification standards.
The advisory comes amid broader regulatory scrutiny of digital media in India, where concerns about misinformation, particularly during elections and sensitive periods, have prompted increased government intervention. Industry observers expect the guidelines may prompt platform operators to invest in enhanced content verification systems and improved metadata tracking mechanisms.
The Ministry has requested compliance within a specified timeframe, though enforcement mechanisms and penalties for non-compliance remain under review. Major streaming services and news portals are expected to acknowledge receipt of the advisory and provide implementation timelines.
