The Kerala assembly had passed a resolution in favour of the name change, which was subsequently forwarded to the Union government in June 2024 for formal approval and notification.
The rechristening reflects a move towards using the Malayalam language version of the state's name in official documentation and communications. 'Keralam' is the Malayalam equivalent of 'Kerala' and has been adopted as the state's official nomenclature following the constitutional procedure required for such changes.
