Centre raises dearness allowance for 4.8 million government staff by 3%

The central government has announced a 3% hike in dearness allowance (DA) and dearness relief (DR) for approximately 4.8 million employees and pensioners on its rolls, providing financial relief amid persistent inflation concerns. The enhancement, approved by the Union cabinet, will be implemented from July 1 and represents a significant adjustment to compensation structures across government departments and ministries.

The three-percentage-point increase in DA and DR will result in an additional annual expenditure of ₹10,016.10 crore on the national exchequer. This adjustment follows the government's standard practice of revising dearness allowance biannually to account for price fluctuations and cost-of-living changes across the country.

Dearness allowance, a component of government employee remuneration, is calculated as a percentage of basic salary and is designed to shield workers from erosion of purchasing power due to inflation. The DA revision affects not only serving central government employees but also retired staff drawing pensions, extending financial relief across a substantial segment of the population dependent on government salaries.

The announcement comes as the government continues to balance fiscal constraints with welfare considerations for its vast workforce. Officials indicated that the revision aligns with inflation trends and assessment of price indices monitored periodically by the Department of Personnel and Training, which oversees compensation structures for government employees across India.
