Centre rolls out new grievance rules for village-level administration

The Centre has formally notified new grievance redressal rules under the VB-G RAM G Act, establishing a structured system for addressing public complaints across multiple administrative levels. Under the rules, state governments are mandated to set up dedicated grievance redressal mechanisms at the gram panchayat, block and district levels, creating a tiered approach to complaint resolution.

The framework is designed to ensure that grievances registered at the village level are processed systematically, with escalation provisions to higher administrative tiers if required. Each level of administration will be responsible for acknowledging complaints, investigating issues and communicating resolutions to aggrieved parties within specified timeframes.

The new rules aim to strengthen democratic accountability and bring governance closer to citizens in rural areas. By institutionalizing grievance redressal at the panchayat level, the rules empower gram sabhas and local bodies to address community concerns more effectively while reducing administrative burden on district-level authorities.

State governments have been directed to implement the rules and ensure capacity-building of officials responsible for managing grievances. The notification is expected to enhance transparency in local governance and provide citizens with a clear pathway for lodging and tracking their complaints across the administrative hierarchy.
