Centre tells Supreme Court new aviation rules to be published within fortnight

A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court heard submissions from the Solicitor General on Friday regarding the implementation of regulations under the new aviation law. Tushar Mehta informed the court that the rules have been finalised and have received administrative clearance, with publication expected within a fortnight.

Justices Vikram Nath, R Mahadevan and Aparesh Kumar Singh directed the Solicitor General to place the published rules before the court at the next hearing scheduled for November 16. The bench has been monitoring the matter closely to ensure timely implementation of the regulatory framework.

The Supreme Court has been seized of a petition filed by social activist S Laxminarayanan, who has sought the establishment of a robust and independent aviation regulator. The plea seeks enhanced transparency, stronger passenger protections, and regulatory guidelines to address volatile fluctuations in airfares and ancillary charges levied by carriers.

The new aviation law represents a comprehensive overhaul of India's civil aviation regulatory framework. The implementation of the associated rules is expected to provide clearer guidelines for industry operations while addressing long-standing consumer concerns about fare volatility and service standards in the sector.
