Centre tightens controls on four CNS drugs amid abuse risks

The Union health ministry has moved to strengthen oversight of four central nervous system (CNS) medications, citing growing concerns over their abuse potential. The regulatory tightening follows recommendations from medical and pharmacological experts who flagged the risk of intoxication and misuse of these substances in the community.
Under the new framework, these four CNS drugs have been placed under Schedule H1 of the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, elevating their regulatory status. This classification requires enhanced surveillance and documentation of their distribution and sale across pharmacies and medical retail outlets.
Retailers and pharmacists will now be mandated to maintain comprehensive sales records for each transaction involving these medicines. The requirement aims to create an audit trail that will help authorities monitor distribution patterns and identify potential cases of abnormal or suspicious purchasing behaviour.
The move aligns with the government's broader strategy to curb the misuse of pharmaceutical products that carry psychoactive properties.
