Centre tightens sugar dealer stock limits as festive season looms
The government has imposed stricter stockholding restrictions on sugar dealers as the new crushing season begins and India heads into peak festival demand. The move comes after sugar prices surged earlier in the year, prompting regulatory action to stabilise markets.

The Centre has further reduced the maximum quantity of sugar that dealers and traders are permitted to hold in inventory as the new sugar season commences. The tighter restrictions are aimed at preventing excessive hoarding that could drive up prices during India's peak festive purchasing period, when household demand traditionally increases sharply.
The decision follows a period of elevated sugar prices witnessed earlier in 2024, which had prompted concerns about affordability and market stability. By capping stockholdings among dealers, the government seeks to ensure a more orderly supply chain and discourage speculative accumulation ahead of the festive rush.
The new season typically sees increased sugarcane crushing as farmers harvest their crop, which normally helps boost supplies. However, with festival demand expected to surge, authorities appear determined to prevent dealers from building up excessive stocks that could create artificial scarcity and price pressures.
The measure forms part of the government's broader price management strategy for sugar, a commodity that influences inflation metrics and household purchasing power across India. Officials have indicated that the restrictions will remain in place throughout the critical season to maintain stable retail prices for consumers.
