Centre to establish national hub for preserving tribal language research

The Ministry of Education is moving to establish a comprehensive national repository dedicated to preserving and documenting India's tribal languages. The initiative will repurpose Adi Vaani as the National Tribal Language Repository, creating a centralized platform for linguistic research, dictionaries, and related scholarly materials.

The repository is designed to serve as a single access point for resources related to tribal language documentation and preservation. By bringing together fragmented linguistic research and reference materials, the platform aims to facilitate easier access for researchers, scholars, and language enthusiasts across the country.

Tribal languages in India face significant preservation challenges, with many dialects and speech communities at risk of erosion due to demographic shifts and limited documentation. The centralised repository is expected to address these concerns by creating a structured, accessible archive of linguistic knowledge and research.

The initiative reflects growing government recognition of the need to safeguard India's linguistic diversity. By digitizing and organizing tribal language materials on a common platform, the repository is intended to support academic research, language revival programmes, and cultural preservation efforts across tribal communities.

The National Tribal Language Repository is expected to facilitate collaboration among linguistic researchers and contribute to efforts in documenting languages that remain under-resourced in existing academic institutions.
