The Centre is set to modernize the Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) administration by adopting a faceless assessment model, mirroring the successful framework already in place for income tax evaluations. The proposed system aims to reduce direct interaction between tax officials and taxpayers while streamlining the assessment process.

The CGST administration currently oversees approximately 6.5 million registered entities. Under the new framework, these registrations would eventually transition to the faceless assessment system, which is expected to enhance transparency and minimize opportunities for discretionary decision-making by tax officials.

The faceless assessment approach has demonstrated effectiveness in the income tax domain by reducing compliance burden and increasing efficiency. By extending this model to GST administration, the government intends to create a more standardized and technology-driven tax assessment process that relies on data analytics and automated systems rather than traditional physical interactions.

The initiative is part of the government's broader push to digitalize tax administration and improve the ease of doing business for taxpayers. Implementation details, including the timeline for rolling out the system across different categories of registrants, are expected to be announced following further deliberation by revenue authorities.
