Century-Old American House Survives Demolition, Becomes Heritage Centre

Santa Monica's last remaining intact shotgun house has found new life as a preservation resource centre, marking the culmination of a decades-long effort to save the 127-year-old structure from demolition. Built in 1897, the modest residence represents a distinctive architectural style that has largely vanished from the American urban landscape.

The historic building endured multiple relocations before securing a permanent home in 2014, following threats of destruction that could have erased an important piece of local heritage. Community advocates and preservation organisations worked collaboratively to prevent the loss of the structure, recognising its cultural and historical significance to the region.

Following its final relocation, the house underwent comprehensive restoration to return it to its original condition. The completed project transformed the building into a Preservation Resource Centre, which now serves as a public educational facility dedicated to local history and heritage conservation principles.
