Chakma autonomous body to adopt NEP, launch weekly language initiative

The Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) has resolved to roll out the National Education Policy beginning the 2027-28 academic year, marking a significant shift in its educational framework. The decision was reached during a council meeting that charted the trajectory for curriculum and pedagogical reforms in the region.

In a complementary initiative, the CADC will designate every Wednesday as 'Mizo Speaking Day' across all primary and middle schools operating within its administrative area. The measure aims to create structured opportunities for students to actively learn and practise the Mizo language in an immersive classroom environment.

The dual approach reflects the council's commitment to balancing national education standards with preservation of regional linguistic heritage. Officials indicated that the language initiative would be integrated into the broader educational ecosystem without disrupting existing academic schedules.

Education officials in the region are expected to begin preparatory work immediately, including curriculum redesign and teacher training programmes, to ensure smooth implementation of both the NEP adoption and the language promotion scheme when they become effective.
