The decision came after organisers failed to secure the necessary permits from local authorities, who deemed the event a significant safety risk.
Promoter Rakesh Trehan had planned the so-called "iPhone Langar"—a term borrowed from the community meals traditionally served at religious institutions—as a promotional event intended to distribute smartphones to a large number of participants. However, officials expressed serious apprehension about the event's capacity to attract overwhelming crowds that could lead to stampedes and injuries.
The administration's move reflects growing concerns across Indian cities about managing large public gatherings without adequate safety infrastructure and crowd control measures. Similar mass distribution events in the past have occasionally resulted in chaotic scenes when organisers underestimated turnout.
