Character development crucial alongside academics, says Defence Minister Singh

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday underscored the importance of holistic education that extends beyond degree conferment, asserting that institutions must prioritize character development alongside academic excellence.

Addressing the 11th convocation of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University in Lucknow, Singh cautioned that degrees lacking the foundation of strong moral values hold limited worth in fostering meaningful societal contributions.

The Defence Minister's remarks come amid broader discussions on education reform in India, where policymakers have increasingly focused on integrating skill development and value-based learning into traditional academic curricula. Singh's address to the graduating students emphasized the responsibility of educational institutions in shaping not just skilled professionals but principled citizens.
