Charity urges lower age threshold for HDB Lease Buyback Scheme

Leap201, a local charitable organization, has put forward recommendations to lower the entry age for the Housing and Development Board's Lease Buyback Scheme, seeking to give Singaporeans greater flexibility in managing their housing assets during retirement.

The organization's proposal would enable property owners aged 55 and above to participate in the scheme, compared with the current requirement of 65 years. Proponents of the change argue that an earlier eligibility age would allow residents to better time their financial decisions and unlock their property value when it may be most beneficial to their circumstances.

Beyond the Lease Buyback Scheme adjustment, Leap201 has also proposed establishing a consolidated retirement planning platform that would integrate various financial and housing options available to older Singaporeans. Such a centralized system could help residents navigate the different schemes and make more informed decisions about their long-term financial security.

The proposals reflect ongoing discussions in Singapore regarding how best to support an aging population in managing housing-related financial matters. The government has previously adjusted eligibility criteria for various housing schemes to better meet the needs of different demographic groups.
