MANILA — The Commission on Higher Education voiced strong objections Thursday to what it characterized as a severe reduction in its budget proposal for the 2027 National Expenditure Program, citing potential impacts on the country's higher education sector.
During House Committee on Appropriations budget hearings, CHEd Chairperson Shirley Agrupis highlighted the disparity between the commission's proposed allocation of P70.2 billion for 2027 and the amount ultimately included in the NEP, noting the difference amounts to nearly 50 percent of the original request.
The significant cut to CHEd's budget proposal raises concerns about the agency's capacity to implement its programs and initiatives across the higher education system. The commission is expected to use the hearing process to make the case for additional funding allocations.
The budget deliberations continue as the legislature works through various agency proposals ahead of finalizing the 2027 national budget.
