Chennai abandons Parandur airport project, opts for terminal expansion

The Tamil Nadu government has decided to abandon the proposed Parandur airport project, marking the end of a contentious infrastructure initiative that had faced mounting resistance from local communities and agricultural stakeholders.

The Parandur site, located on the outskirts of Chennai, had encountered significant opposition from residents concerned about displacement and loss of agricultural land. Environmental groups had also raised questions about the project's impact on the surrounding region. Though the government had begun acquiring land for the development, the acquisition process remained incomplete and increasingly contentious, with many landowners resisting compensation offers.

The project had received various regulatory approvals in principle, but the practical challenges of land acquisition and persistent local agitation made implementation increasingly untenable. Rather than continue pushing forward with the Parandur alternative, state authorities determined that expanding existing airport infrastructure would be a more viable path.

Chennai's aviation sector has been under strain as passenger traffic has grown substantially in recent years. The proposed second airport was intended to ease congestion and provide additional capacity for the region's expanding air travel demands. The government will now focus on developing Terminal 5 at the existing Chennai International Airport, which is expected to significantly increase the airport's overall passenger handling capacity without requiring large-scale land acquisition in residential areas.

The expansion of the current airport is expected to provide the necessary capacity boost in a shorter timeframe compared to developing an entirely new airport facility, though specific timelines for the terminal's completion have not yet been announced.
