Chennai Corporation plans comprehensive streetlight upkeep across 12 zones

The Chennai Corporation is set to implement a structured streetlight maintenance scheme covering its entire 12-zone jurisdiction, focusing on improved public lighting across the metropolis. The comprehensive programme will establish protocols for regular monitoring and swift repairs of malfunctioning street lights throughout the city.

Under the proposed framework, Corporation officials will conduct daily inspections of streetlights to identify defects and maintenance requirements. The scheme mandates repair of faulty lights within 24 hours of receiving complaints, whether from civic officials or members of the public. This rapid response mechanism is designed to minimise periods of inadequate street lighting and enhance public safety.

The maintenance work extends beyond individual light fixtures to encompass the entire electrical infrastructure supporting the streetlight network. Feeder boxes, junction boxes, poles, and associated electrical components will be subject to regular maintenance and upkeep. This holistic approach aims to ensure the long-term functionality and reliability of the city's public lighting system.

The proposal is expected to improve the quality of street lighting services and reduce response times for residents reporting faulty lights. By centralising maintenance protocols across all zones, the Corporation seeks to standardise service delivery and ensure consistent upkeep of the city's street lighting infrastructure.
