Chennai Corporation Seeks Nod for Amma Canteen at Omandurar Hospital

The Chennai Corporation has approached the state government for authorization to open an Amma Canteen at Omandurar Government Multi-Specialty Hospital, part of efforts to expand the popular subsidized meal scheme across public healthcare facilities.

Amma Canteens, named after former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa's welfare initiatives, operate across Tamil Nadu offering discounted meals to citizens. The proposed canteen at the major government hospital would serve patients, their caregivers, and hospital staff, providing nutritious meals at subsidized rates.

The establishment of such facilities at hospital premises is intended to ease the financial burden on patients undergoing treatment while ensuring they have access to hygienic food options. Hospital officials believe the canteen would complement patient care services by addressing a key requirement during hospitalization.
