Chennai fisherfolk escalate pressure over land rights, housing demands

Fisherfolk from Chennai's coastal settlements demonstrated against the state government's planned assembly and secretariat construction projects on Thursday, raising concerns about displacement and inadequate rehabilitation. The protesters, representing traditional fishing communities, called for the immediate withdrawal of the development proposals, citing their lack of secure land tenure and substandard housing conditions.

Demonstrators presented a list of demands to state authorities, prioritising the issuance of formal land titles to community members and comprehensive housing improvements. Current shelters in several fishing hamlets lack basic amenities, compounding concerns about relocation without proper compensation or alternative accommodation arrangements.

The fisherfolk argued that their historical occupation of these coastal lands entitled them to legitimate claims over their current settlements and that development projects should factor in community welfare provisions.
