Chennai launches massive stormwater drain desilting programme

Chennai's Municipal Corporation has initiated an extensive desilting operation encompassing 1,671 kilometres of stormwater drains throughout the metropolitan area, according to municipal officials. The massive undertaking represents one of the city's most comprehensive efforts to rehabilitate its aging drainage network.
The desilting programme is designed to clear accumulated silt, debris, and other obstructions that compromise the capacity and efficiency of the city's stormwater management system. Over time, stormwater drains accumulate sediment that reduces their ability to handle rainfall, a critical concern for a city prone to seasonal flooding and waterlogging.
The initiative assumes particular significance given Chennai's vulnerability to heavy monsoon rains and occasional cyclonic activity. A functional drainage system is essential for preventing urban flooding that disrupts transportation, damages infrastructure, and creates public health hazards. Officials emphasize that the desilting work will enhance the drains' water-carrying capacity and improve overall urban resilience.
