Chennai logs 4,600 fever cases in September; hospitalisation rate remains low

Chennai's public health authorities documented around 4,600 fever cases throughout September, according to data released by the Greater Chennai Corporation. The figures underscore the seasonal surge in vector-borne illnesses typically observed during the monsoon months in the region.

GCC Commissioner G.S. Sameeran indicated that the majority of dengue infections documented during the period were self-limiting in nature. Approximately 95 percent of cases were successfully managed through home-based treatment protocols, reflecting the generally mild course of many dengue infections in the population.

Only about 5 percent of the reported dengue cases necessitated hospitalisation, the commissioner stated. This low hospitalisation rate suggests that severe manifestations remained limited, though health authorities continue to monitor cases closely during the high-transmission season.

The corporation has maintained surveillance systems across the city to track fever cases and facilitate early detection of complications. Residents have been advised to adopt precautionary measures including mosquito-control practices and prompt reporting of symptoms to healthcare facilities.
