Chennai reroutes Vinayaka idol immersions to protect coastal zones

The Chennai Corporation has announced plans to divert approximately 700 Vinayaka Chaturthi idols from Pattinapakkam and Palavakkam beaches to Ennore and Kovalam for immersion purposes. The decision aims to ensure compliance with coastal regulation zone guidelines while accommodating the annual festival tradition.

The rerouting follows deliberations on the practical challenges of excluding Pattinapakkam and Neelankarai from immersion activities, locations the National Green Tribunal had identified as falling within CRZ-I (Critical Regulation Zone-I) classification. These zones require strict environmental protection measures due to their ecological sensitivity.

The Corporation's move balances the need to preserve the Vinayaka Chaturthi immersion practice with statutory environmental safeguards. Ennore and Kovalam have been identified as suitable alternative sites that meet regulatory requirements for idol immersions.

The decision reflects ongoing efforts by municipal authorities to manage large-scale religious practices in compliance with environmental protection norms. Officials have indicated that the rerouting will be coordinated with relevant stakeholders to ensure smooth implementation during the festival period.
