Chennai storm-water drain project nears completion ahead of monsoon

The Greater Chennai Corporation is racing to complete critical storm-water drain construction work near Virugambakkam canal before the onset of monsoon rains. GCC Commissioner G.S. Sameeran conducted an inspection of the ongoing development works, which are expected to be finished within a fortnight.

The project, undertaken at an estimated cost of ₹30 crore, forms part of broader efforts to enhance the city's drainage infrastructure and reduce waterlogging during heavy rainfall. The work includes the construction of retaining walls along the canal to prevent erosion and strengthen its structural integrity.

Silt and waste removal from the canal bed has been a key component of the initiative, aimed at improving water flow capacity and preventing blockages during monsoon season. Officials have prioritized completion of the work to ensure the drainage system functions optimally when heavy rains arrive.

The storm-water drain project is part of the corporation's wider infrastructure development programme to address flooding challenges in Chennai. Timely completion of such projects has become increasingly critical as the city prepares for annual monsoon rains that typically bring significant precipitation to the region.
