Chennai targets 70% stormwater drain clearance by September

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is accelerating its stormwater drain maintenance programme, with plans to complete desilting operations on more than 70 percent of the city's drainage infrastructure by the end of September. The initiative comes as Chennai prepares for the seasonal monsoons, when accumulated silt and debris in drains can obstruct water flow and exacerbate flooding in low-lying areas.

Stormwater drains across the city accumulate sediment over time, reducing their capacity to channel rainwater efficiently. By removing these deposits through desilting operations, the GCC aims to restore the drains to optimal functionality and improve the city's flood management capabilities. The corporation has been conducting the work systematically across different zones to ensure comprehensive coverage.

This maintenance drive is part of the city's broader effort to strengthen its infrastructure resilience ahead of the monsoon season. Regular desilting of stormwater channels is a critical preventive measure to minimize waterlogging and flooding incidents that often disrupt traffic, damage properties, and pose public health risks during heavy rainfall periods.

The GCC's target completion date of September-end suggests the corporation aims to have the bulk of desilting work finished well before the onset of the main monsoon rains, typically expected from October onwards. Successful completion of the programme could significantly enhance Chennai's drainage system efficiency and reduce vulnerability to weather-related disruptions during the rainy season.
