Chennai theatre group brings Vaikom Muhammad Basheer tales to Karnataka

A theatre group from Chennai is set to present dramatic interpretations of works by Vaikom Muhammad Basheer, one of India's most celebrated writers, during a two-city tour of Karnataka this month. The performances will introduce audiences in the region to the iconic Malayalam author's narratives through stage adaptations.

The first show will be held on August 28 at Heggodu in Sagara taluk, located in Shivamogga district. The production will subsequently travel to Mysuru, where it will be staged at Rangayana, the state's premier theatre institution, on August 30.

Basheer, who won India's highest literary honour, the Jnanpith Award, is renowned for his satirical and humanistic stories that explore the everyday lives of ordinary people. His works have been translated into numerous Indian and foreign languages, making him a bridge between Kerala's literary traditions and audiences across the country.

The Chennai-based group's initiative reflects the continuing resonance of Basheer's literary legacy beyond Malayalam-speaking regions. By adapting his stories for the stage, the ensemble aims to make his narratives accessible to diverse audiences while maintaining the cultural nuances that define his writing.
