Chennai to invest ₹41 crore in flood mitigation drainage project

The Chennai municipal authorities have approved a ₹41-crore project to construct and improve stormwater drainage infrastructure in the city's western zones, targeting chronic flooding in densely populated residential areas. The drainage system overhaul will cover Villivakkam, Ambattur, Korattur, Padi, and Anna Nagar West, areas that have historically experienced significant inundation during monsoon seasons. Officials expect the enhanced stormwater management system to significantly reduce waterlogging and improve urban resilience against heavy rainfall events. The project forms part of a broader flood mitigation strategy being pursued by the municipal administration to address infrastructure gaps in the rapidly expanding metropolitan region. Alongside the drainage initiative, the city is simultaneously upgrading the sewage treatment plant at Tiruvottiyur at an estimated cost of ₹42 crore. The twin projects underscore the municipality's commitment to enhancing both stormwater management and wastewater treatment capacity. Together, the infrastructure investments aim to improve public health outcomes and prevent the recurring disruptions that flooding causes to residential and commercial activities across western Chennai.
