Chennai to invest ₹98 crore in upgrading integrated command centre

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has unveiled an ambitious infrastructure upgrade worth ₹98.25 crore aimed at enhancing its integrated command and control centre, officials announced. The comprehensive modernisation initiative will systematically integrate multiple monitoring technologies including additional surveillance cameras, flood detection sensors, rainfall gauges, and pump-monitoring units into a centralised platform over the next five years.

The expansion programme forms part of the civic body's broader push to strengthen disaster management and urban resilience. The upgraded command centre will enable real-time tracking of critical infrastructure across the metropolitan area, improving response times during weather emergencies and flooding events that frequently impact the city.

Beyond enhancing the main control hub, the GCC has also proposed establishing three regional integrated command and control centres (ICCCs) to distribute monitoring responsibilities across different zones of the city. This decentralised approach is expected to create redundancy in the system while improving localised emergency response capabilities.

The modernisation project reflects growing recognition among Indian urban authorities of the need for technology-driven governance frameworks. Smart city initiatives across the country have increasingly emphasised integrated monitoring systems as essential tools for managing the challenges posed by rapid urbanisation and climate-related disruptions.
