Chennai to upgrade 160 km of roads with ₹150 crore investment plan

The Chennai Corporation is moving forward with plans to upgrade and improve roads across 160 kilometres of the city, with an estimated investment of ₹150 crore. The civic body is currently in the process of preparing detailed project reports (DPRs) for the comprehensive road enhancement scheme.

Once the necessary administrative approvals are secured, the corporation will immediately invite tenders from contractors and construction firms. Corporation officials said the timeline for the project has been set to ensure work commences ahead of the Northeast monsoon season, which typically brings heavy rainfall to the region.

The road improvement initiative is part of the civic body's broader efforts to enhance urban infrastructure and reduce congestion in India's fourth-largest city. Better road conditions are expected to improve traffic flow and reduce wear on vehicles while extending the lifespan of the city's road network.

The project's phased approach through detailed planning aims to ensure transparent procurement and efficient execution. Corporation authorities have indicated that the scale of this upgrade programme reflects the growing infrastructure demands of Chennai's expanding urban population and increasing vehicular traffic.
