Chhetri admits envy as India prepares for Brazil, Uruguay clashes

Sunil Chhetri, who stepped down as India's talismanic captain after nearly two decades representing the nation, acknowledged mixed emotions watching the present generation face elite opposition. The former striker, who became the face of Indian football during a distinguished career spanning more than two decades, said he harbours "a little jealousy" as a spectator witnessing matches against powerhouses Brazil and Uruguay.

"In my 24-26 years as a professional and nearly 20 years with the national team, I never got an opportunity like this," Chhetri told the All India Football Federation (AIFF). Despite his storied career, which saw him become one of Asia's most prolific strikers, the legendary forward never featured against such calibre opposition in his national colours.

The friendlies are scheduled for September, presenting India with a rare chance to test itself against top-ranked nations. Chhetri expressed optimism about the squad's prospects, urging the players to remain fit, compete with full determination and capitalise on the opportunity. He also voiced confidence in head coach's selection decisions and the coaching staff's preparations for the high-profile encounters.
