Chicago approves $127M redevelopment of vacant LeClaire Courts site

Chicago officials have approved a $127 million redevelopment project at the LeClaire Courts site, marking a significant step toward revitalizing the underutilized urban space. The first phase of the initiative will comprise two six-story buildings housing 183 apartments, along with an integrated childcare facility serving the community.

Approximately 90 percent of the residential units will be reserved for low-income households, emphasizing the project's focus on affordable housing provision in the city. The development is designed to restore economic activity and social connectivity to an area that has lacked sustained investment and community amenities.

Construction activities are scheduled to commence in the final quarter of 2026, pending completion of necessary preparatory work. The phased approach to development suggests additional components may follow the initial residential phase, though specifics remain under planning review.

The project represents part of broader municipal efforts to address Chicago's affordable housing shortage while simultaneously addressing urban blight and vacancy issues in strategic locations. City planners view the LeClaire Courts redevelopment as a catalyst for neighborhood stabilization and long-term economic development in the surrounding area.
