Chicago's decision to reverse the flow of its river stands as one of the most audacious public health engineering projects in American history. Faced with devastating disease outbreaks linked to contaminated drinking water sourced from Lake Michigan, city officials in 1900 authorized the construction of a canal system that fundamentally altered the direction of the Chicago River, redirecting wastewater away from the freshwater lake and toward the Mississippi River watershed instead.
The initiative proved remarkably effective in addressing immediate public health crises. By diverting sewage away from the primary drinking water source, Chicago significantly reduced waterborne disease transmission and improved sanitation standards across the rapidly growing metropolis.
