Child Among Two Dead in Mumbai Dahi Handi Festival Accidents

Two people died during Dahi Handi festivities in the Mumbai region, including a seven-year-old child, authorities reported. The incidents occurred as participants engaged in the traditional practice of forming human pyramids to break clay pots filled with curd and butter, a central element of Krishna Janmashtami celebrations.

According to officials, 212 participants sustained injuries while attempting the pyramid formations. Mumbai accounted for 168 of the injured, while Thane city recorded 44 additional casualties. The injuries ranged in severity as performers attempted to reach hanging pots suspended at considerable heights.

Dahi Handi celebrations have long been associated with the risk of accidents due to the physical demands of the activity and the heights involved. Participants, known as 'Govindas,' compete annually to form increasingly complex human chains and pyramids during the festival, which marks the birth of Lord Krishna in Hindu tradition.

The incidents underscore ongoing safety concerns surrounding the traditional festival, which draws thousands of enthusiasts across the Mumbai metropolitan region each year. Authorities continue to monitor celebrations and provide emergency response services during the peak festive period.
