Childcare group seeks doubling of tax relief for daycare expenses

KUANTAN — The Malaysia Children Daycare Association has proposed doubling tax relief for daycare fees to RM6,000 annually, seeking to ease the financial pressures facing working families across the country.

The proposal, submitted as part of pre-budget consultations, would increase the current tax deduction threshold and provide greater support for parents who rely on childcare services. Association representatives argued that rising childcare costs have become a significant expense for households, particularly in urban areas where quality daycare facilities command premium fees.

The group contended that enhanced tax relief would help offset operational costs for parents while potentially encouraging more individuals, particularly mothers, to remain in the workforce. Current arrangements, the association suggested, do not adequately reflect the true cost of childcare services in Malaysia's economic landscape.

The proposal comes amid broader discussions on family-friendly workplace policies and government support mechanisms. If adopted in Budget 2027, the measure would represent a significant step toward acknowledging childcare as a priority concern for Malaysian families managing dual incomes and professional responsibilities.

The government is expected to review various pre-budget submissions from stakeholder groups before finalizing fiscal proposals for the upcoming year.
