Children dominate Kelantan drowning fatalities, data shows

KOTA BHARU — Children under 14 years old represent approximately 36 per cent of the 96 drowning deaths recorded in Kelantan over the past year, raising alarm among state authorities and child safety advocates.

The statistical breakdown underscores the vulnerability of young children near water bodies across the state, from rivers and coastal areas to man-made reservoirs and recreational facilities. Water-related incidents remain a leading cause of unintentional injury and death among children in Malaysia, with Kelantan appearing particularly affected.

The figures have prompted renewed calls for enhanced water safety education in schools and communities, improved supervision protocols at public beaches and swimming areas, and better access to swimming lessons for young children. Experts emphasise that many childhood drowning incidents occur quickly and silently, often without witnesses realising the danger.

State authorities have indicated plans to review existing safety measures and increase public awareness campaigns during peak water recreation seasons. Community leaders have also stressed the importance of parental vigilance and basic water safety knowledge as critical components of drowning prevention strategies.

The data comes as Malaysia continues to grapple with consistently high drowning mortality rates, particularly among children in coastal and riverine states.
