Home Minister Saifuddin Hamzah has issued a clarification on citizenship and ethnic registration for children born to Malay Muslims who have married foreign Muslim nationals.
According to Saifuddin, parents in such unions have flexibility in determining their children's registration status. The children may be registered as Malays, in keeping with the Malaysian parent's status, or alternatively registered according to the ancestry of the foreign parent.
The clarification addresses questions surrounding the rights and options available to mixed couples where at least one partner is a Malay Muslim. The Home Ministry's guidance underscores that parents retain discretion in how their children are officially registered with Malaysian authorities.
The announcement comes amid ongoing discussions about citizenship, ethnic classification, and family law in Malaysia, where religious and ethnic categories hold significant administrative and legal importance. The ministry's position aims to provide clarity for families navigating registration processes.
