China confident of victory in any confrontation with Philippines

China's ambassador to the Philippines declared on Tuesday that Beijing would have little difficulty winning any direct confrontation with Manila, marking a sharp escalation in tensions between the two countries.

The diplomatic statement came one day after Philippine Defence Secretary Gilberto Teodoro characterised China as a regional "troublemaker," criticism that appears to have prompted the unusually blunt response from the Chinese envoy.

The exchange reflects deepening friction in the South China Sea, where the Philippines and China have clashed repeatedly over territorial claims and maritime rights. Manila has sought closer security partnerships with the United States and other regional allies to counter Chinese assertiveness in waters it considers its exclusive economic zone.

Beijing has long maintained its claims to vast portions of the South China Sea, rejecting an international arbitration ruling that invalidated much of its historical claims. Chinese military presence in the disputed waters has grown substantially in recent years, including the establishment of artificial islands equipped with military infrastructure.

The latest war of words underscores the fragile state of relations between Manila and Beijing, with both nations frequently trading accusations over provocative actions at sea and conflicting territorial ambitions in one of Asia's most strategically important waterways.
