China confirms talks on historic Xi-Trump-Putin trilateral summit

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said at a press briefing in Beijing that China is actively communicating with relevant parties to facilitate a meeting among the three heads of state. While no formal agreement has been reached, discussions suggest the summit could occur this month during a regional leaders' gathering in Shenzhen.

Such a trilateral meeting would be historic in its scope, bringing together the leaders of the world's three major powers. However, analysts caution that substantive discussions on policy matters are unlikely given the divergent geopolitical interests of the three nations.

Instead, experts suggest the primary objective would be symbolic—a carefully choreographed photo opportunity designed to project unity and diplomatic engagement. "China wants the image but not the costs," said Sun Yun, director of the China programme at the Stimson Center, noting that while the meeting may occur, its format and content remain uncertain.

Beijing is serving as host for this year's regional leaders' summit, providing the diplomatic platform for such high-level engagements. The potential meeting would represent a rare moment of convergence among three leaders whose strategic interests have increasingly diverged in recent years.
