China criticises US sanctions targeting Iranian airlines as unlawful

China has formally objected to United States sanctions imposed on Iranian airlines, describing the restrictions as violating international law. A foreign ministry spokesperson said the measures represent an overreach of American authority and contravene established norms governing cross-border commerce.

The criticism reflects Beijing's positioning as one of Iran's strongest economic partners and most consistent diplomatic allies on the international stage. China maintains substantial trade relationships with Tehran and has resisted pressure from Washington to curtail commercial engagements with the Islamic Republic.

The US has progressively expanded its sanctions regime targeting Iranian aviation, citing concerns over the sector's alleged connections to military activities and sanctions evasion. American officials argue the measures are necessary to prevent technology transfers and enforce compliance with international restrictions.

China's rebuke aligns with its broader opposition to what Beijing characterises as unilateral American sanctions imposed without multilateral consensus. The country has previously called for dialogue and negotiation as alternatives to punitive economic measures, particularly regarding Iran-related disputes.
