China defends coast guard operations near Taiwan-held atoll
Beijing has characterized its coast guard activities around a strategically important Taiwan-controlled South China Sea atoll as routine order-maintenance operations. Taiwan has expressed concern that China is attempting to assert administrative control over the disputed territory.

China's government on Wednesday defended coast guard operations around Itu Aba, a small atoll at the northern edge of the South China Sea that is administered by Taiwan, saying the activities were aimed at maintaining maritime order in the region.
The characterization comes as Taiwan officials have raised alarm over what they view as an intensification of Beijing's efforts to enforce jurisdiction over the disputed territory. The atoll, which sits strategically along major shipping lanes, has long been a flashpoint in regional tensions over competing territorial claims.
China's defense ministry and coast guard have increased their presence in the South China Sea in recent years, conducting regular patrols and enforcement operations. Beijing maintains sovereignty claims over the entire South China Sea, overlapping with claims from several Southeast Asian nations and Taiwan.
Taiwan's government has expressed growing concerns about pressure on its personnel and operations around the atoll, which hosts a small garrison and research station. The incident reflects broader tensions in the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea, where multiple claimants continue to assert overlapping territorial rights.
