China has reiterated its firm backing for Malaysia's potential membership in the BRICS bloc of emerging economies, Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said. The statement underscores Beijing's strategic interest in expanding the influence of the Brazil-Russia-India-China-South Africa grouping within Southeast Asia. Zahid made the remarks following discussions with Chinese officials on bilateral relations and regional matters. Beyond membership considerations, China has signaled expectations that Malaysia will leverage its position within ASEAN to strengthen the association's ties with Beijing. The dual emphasis on BRICS membership and Malaysia's ASEAN role reflects China's broader strategy to deepen economic and diplomatic engagement across the region. Malaysia has previously expressed interest in joining BRICS, which represents a significant counterweight to Western-dominated international institutions. The bloc has been actively seeking new members as it looks to expand its geopolitical and economic footprint in the Global South.
