China is moving forward with construction of a massive dam on the Brahmaputra River, a project it has dubbed the 'project of the century,' despite mounting concerns from India about its environmental and hydrological implications. The infrastructure initiative has been formally incorporated into China's 15th Five-Year Plan for renewable energy development, signaling Beijing's commitment to its completion.

The decision to proceed comes at a sensitive time, following severe flash flooding that devastated areas along the Nepal-China border, intensifying focus on how upstream dam construction could affect water management and flood risk downstream. India has long expressed apprehension about Chinese dam projects on the Brahmaputra, particularly given the river's critical importance to millions of people across Northeast India and its role in regional water security.

The Brahmaputra, which originates in Tibet and flows through Arunachal Pradesh before entering Assam, is one of Asia's largest rivers by discharge volume. Any significant alteration to its flow patterns through dam construction could have cascading effects on agriculture, flood management, and hydroelectric capacity in Indian territory, analysts warn.

China has historically limited transparency regarding its dam projects on cross-border rivers, restricting information sharing on water releases and operational details. The inclusion of the Brahmaputra project in the five-year plan suggests Beijing intends to advance the scheme regardless of external objections, though the scale and timeline of construction remain unclear.
