China formally indicts ex-Politburo member Ma Xingrui for bribery

China's state prosecutors have formally indicted Ma Xingrui, a former member of the Communist Party's Politburo, on charges of accepting bribes described as "particularly large amounts." The charges allege that Ma exploited his official positions and status to seek illicit benefits while in office.

Ma held several senior roles throughout his career in the Communist Party, including positions in major provincial administrations. His indictment underscores the Chinese government's ongoing efforts to pursue corruption cases against top-tier officials as part of its decade-long anti-corruption drive.

The formal charges follow Ma's earlier detention as part of investigation procedures. Prosecutors contend that Ma systematically abused his authority to solicit and accept bribes over an extended period, leveraging the political influence that accompanied his high-ranking positions.

The case adds to a series of high-profile corruption prosecutions targeting former Politburo members and other senior officials. China's anti-corruption campaign, overseen by the party's Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, has resulted in the conviction and imprisonment of numerous officials at various administrative levels since 2012.
