China-North Korea bridge opens after over a decade of delays

The New Yalu River bridge, connecting the Chinese city of Dandong in Liaoning province with North Korea across their mutual frontier, has commenced operations following a construction delay spanning more than a decade. The crossing provides a crucial transport link between the northeastern Chinese border hub and its economically isolated neighbour.

The completion of the bridge project represents a tangible manifestation of strengthened bilateral ties between Beijing and Pyongyang. Infrastructure development across their shared border has long been viewed as an indicator of the relationship's health and economic trajectory.

Dandong has historically served as China's primary commercial gateway to North Korea, facilitating trade and people movement across their 1,420-kilometre border. The new crossing is expected to enhance logistics capacity and facilitate increased commercial activity between the two countries.

The project's extended timeline reflects the complex geopolitical and economic circumstances that have characterised the China-North Korea relationship in recent years. The opening arrives amid broader efforts to strengthen regional connectivity and economic integration across Northeast Asia.
