China outlines roadmap for nuclear-powered combat tank with extended range

Chinese military researchers have presented a multi-phase blueprint for developing a nuclear-powered main battle tank, according to technical proposals released by the country's defense research community. The 60-tonne platform is designed to be powered by compact nuclear reactors, marking a significant departure from conventional diesel and gas turbine propulsion systems.

The roadmap spans three development phases, with key milestones extending to 2045. Among the system's planned capabilities is integration of a railgun with an estimated 50-megajoule energy output, enabling projectile strikes at ranges exceeding 450 kilometers. Such extended-range firepower would significantly exceed current tank artillery capabilities, which typically operate within 40-50 kilometer ranges.

The proposal includes development of a miniaturized reactor specifically designed to power the tank system, addressing one of the primary technical challenges in nuclear-powered vehicle design. Researchers project that the platform would fundamentally alter tactical and operational doctrine for armored ground forces, though significant engineering hurdles remain before any prototype deployment.

The initiative reflects China's broader investments in next-generation military technologies. However, the feasibility of fielding such systems faces substantial technical, logistical, and strategic considerations that typically extend timelines for advanced weapons platforms beyond initial projections.
