Deputy Prime Minister Zahid Hamidi said China has given its assurance of backing for Malaysia's push to join BRICS, the influential bloc of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The statement underscores Beijing's commitment to supporting Malaysia's multilateral engagement at a time when the country seeks to expand its international partnerships and economic ties.
Zahid indicated that Chinese officials conveyed their hope that Malaysia would maintain its strategic position as a connector between BRICS and ASEAN. This dual role would enable Malaysia to facilitate greater cooperation and dialogue between the two groupings, potentially opening new avenues for regional development and trade.
Malaysia's application to join BRICS reflects its broader strategy to diversify diplomatic and economic partnerships beyond traditional Western-aligned forums. The membership would position Malaysia alongside major emerging economies and enhance its voice in shaping global affairs during a period of significant geopolitical realignment.
The support from China, one of BRICS's most influential members, is expected to strengthen Malaysia's candidacy as the bloc considers expansion beyond its current five founding members. Recent years have seen growing interest in BRICS membership from countries across Asia, Africa and Latin America seeking greater representation in global governance structures.
